I am seeking a grant to expand our safe place areas for student in need of SEL and refocusing out of the classroom. The goal is to help all at risk students to increase their interpersonal skills to calm down and refocus when needed and to provide a safe place for student who may have dealt with trauma. The goal is to create two calm down zones in the school so primary and intermediate students may access them when being in a classroom environment may be to overwhelming. The areas will be based off the current research in SEL and dealing with students in trauma.
Our school has determined a need to help at-risk students in their interpersonal and SEL skills. Due to COVID and/or trauma, many students lack the ability to self-regulate their emotions. The students will have access to two areas in the school to go in a safe area to practice self-regulation skills and techniques such as breathing or using a fidget. This area will provide students the chance to refocus and return to the classroom and be successful.
The safe place to succeed will enable at-risk students to improve their self-regulation using SEL strategies to calm down and express their feelings. The area will be seen as a safe place to calm ones body and learn strategies to help in the future.
The purchased items create a calming area that will provide strategies and sensory outlets.
