If you do not believe in the power of students, think about the “Greta Thunberg effect”. One student can change and influence a nation. My goal as an AGP teacher is to provide my students with the STEM tools to not only educate but also inspire stewardship of earth. This grant is requesting the electronics to create a inquiry-based lesson plan on not only “SC.5.P.10.4 – Investigate and explain that electrical energy can be transformed into heat, light, sound, and motion.” but also explain bigger issues that face earth and how to generate alternative energy.
What is light and heat energy and how does it affect earth? My lesson plan consists of hands-on learning, observations and classic classroom education. My students learn in different ways and with this grant I can offer differential learning on the topic Forms of Energy. If this grant is awarded we will have a hands-on lesson for every day we cover the topic. The circuits open the door for electricity to transform into Mechanical (Motion), Light, Thermal (heat) and Sound energy. The ozobot can take my students on a walk through “clean” and “dirty” energy. My students can create a solar oven to see how to harness the heat from the sun. We learn about evaporation of water based on where we place water in cups. There is so much to learn to understand how one person can make a difference in this world of energy.
My students need differential learning more than ever. Allowing my students to walk around and observe, build with their hands and be proud of their accomplishments is vital in today's climate. The kits and supplies can be used for other lessons as well and as a reward system for students who have completed their work and need stimulating challenges.
If awarded, this grant provides me with the tools I need to successfully teach the forms of energy by allowing students to create, observe and wonder.
