“Eureka!” - Archimedes, father of mathematics - translates to “I’ve found it!”. I want my students to get just as excited as they find and solve the mathematical clues I have placed in my escape room classroom. I teach them standard MAFS.4.OA.2.4; Investigate factors and multiples. The goal of this grant is to combat the ‘pandemic slide’ by getting the students' competitive spirit going by trying to break out of the classroom by solving math factors and multiples.
My classroom is a diverse learning space and I am always looking for a way to reach all my students. The goal of this grant is to challenge my students minds with math provoking questions and challenging puzzles. My students learn to hone in on their investigative and collaboration skills while learning about factors and multiples. They have to use their mathematical skills to solve clues like what factors do 24 and 36 have in common. The material requested in this grant are a breakout EDU kit and extra items like a hasp to host up to 6 locks. Different locks that can create different clues like directional lock for North-East-West-South, Four digit lock for larger numbers, UV lights to hunt down invisible number clues and everything to make interesting pieces to find such as puzzle pieces to be customized and envelopes to hold clues. I can offer differential learning by providing different clues to students to make the playing field even or team up students with different skills.
The ‘pandemic slide’ may affect our students in different ways and the power of differential learning has never been so important.
If awarded, I will introduce the Breakout kit to the teachers at my school. These kits can be used for many different subject areas and by different grades. Many breakout clues have already been created and are available on sites like Teacher Pay Teachers and on the BreakoutEDU website. We can set up the classroom for a breakout session so my students can have fun while receiving instructions. The benefits include retention of the math concepts.
The goal is to have one breakout session per quarter per class I teach. The breakout kit and accessories will keep students engaged in their learning for years to come.
