Project Goal

The goal of the project is to fund a Little Free Library for Jefferson students and the nearby community of Carver City. The LFL will serve an under-resourced area and promote literacy for students, staff, and neighbors. (The image shows a LFL that was decorated by art students for Lennard High School.)

How Project Benefits Students

Jefferson students have a lovely library in their school, but it is open only when school is open. This LFL will be outside and readily accessible to students during the summer and during school breaks -- and during unexpected times when school is closed, as we recently witnessed during Hurricane Ian. The LFL will also offer residents of the Carver City neighborhood a small library in their community. The LFL will be a permanent installation, and it will serve to communicate a sense of literacy and the importance of reading. Additionally, we will enlist the help of Jefferson's art students to decorate the LFL with Jefferson's dragon mascot, thus involving students in the creation and installation of the LFL. Students can also participate in a book drive to collect books for the LFL, thus helping students understand the importance of giving back to their communities.

Expected Outcome(s)

Not only will more than 1,400 students and more than 100 teachers and staff benefit from the LFL but many dozens of residents in the Carver City community will benefit as well, as the library will serve a range of patron groups. Promoting literacy both inside and outside our school will communicate its importance to all stakeholders and potentially result in improved grades and test scores; more importantly, though, we hope the LFL will spark a lifelong love of reading. Additionally, future Jefferson students will be able to use the LFL, as it will be a permanent fixture on the campus for years to come. When students and staff arrive at Jefferson, they will immediately see that the school places a high priority on reading and literacy.

Detailed Cost Summary

The library box and post will be ordered from Little Free Library (LittleFreeLibrary.org), a nonprofit organization that crafts these durable library boxes. This organization is an approved HCPS vendor. The grant writer will provide an initial supply of books from First Book (FirstBook.org) for the LFL. Thank you!
