Provide access to deeper learning and emotional competence by using a sensory room.
When we support sensory needs in severely disabled students we are creating an environment for deeper learning and emotional competence. Sensory challenges can create distress and anxiety. A sensory room can help with maintaining focus and reducing reactive behaviors. When we build in sensory breaks in the daily schedule we can prevent outbursts, and help students build emotional regulation.
Sensory room breaks will be used as an incentive for working on academic subjects. Knowing that the students can be in an preferred environment during their breaks, will motivate them to do their work. Sensory room breaks will help with focusing and preventing students from feeling overwhelmed from all the expectations in a classroom.
