Project Goal

The purchase of this project is to give an entire classes the opportunity to do hands on coding and problems solving. Let's get rolling!

How Project Benefits Students

The projected outcome is to get kids coding. Coding is essential for students going into any type of STEM line of study. Most kids have completed Hour of Code or have played 2-D coding games online. There is something different, and much more challenging when students get a "bot" in their hand.
Typically we present coding activities with robots in "challenges". It may be completing a maze, or teaching your robot to do something. These types of task require skills that are hard to teach in the classroom such as:
Resilience and perseverance
Problem-solving
Communication
Teamwork
Independence
Imagination and creativity
Planning

I am interested in the SPHERO specifically because of the diversity of coding that can be done with these small robots. First off, they're very responsive, which is great for all ages. Younger students can "draw" code, while more proficient coders can use block. The app is easily accessed on devices that the students bring in. Because of the ease of coding these, it will be easy for me to work with other teachers so they can bring it into their classroom.
Many students don't know they are interested in coding until they have the opportunity. The objective is to give the that opportunity to our students.

Expected Outcome(s)

Expected outcomes is that ALL students at McKitrick will have had the chance to code-- hands on. This is called a reboot because we have collected some robots along the way-- by donations and grants, but it is geared mostly for intermediate students. Also, the robots we do have demand lots of assembly which makes is difficult to bring to other classes. This one box is a full class set that can be transported form class to class in no time, and there is zero set up. I do believe that this kit will hook our students, starting in kindergarten.
Please consider donating to this grant, as if it is fulfilled, we will surpass our goal of implementation.
