Project Goal

Our project is to create a motor lab for students with disabilities to be able to engage in sensory opportunities in order to have their sensory needs met and improve their fine motor skills.

How Project Benefits Students

A sensory room is a designated space specifically designed with tools and equipment to help a child regulate their senses, especially when they are experiencing sensory overload. For many kids with sensory issues, having access to a sensory room means they have a safe space of their own where they can go to feel regulated and calm. Sensory rooms have the bonus of providing practice in certain skills, such as fine and gross motor skills, verbal development and other skills depending on what equipment or toys are available.

This project will benefit students with disabilities to have opportunities to meet their developing sensory needs and fine motor skills with activities and materials developed explicitly for students like themselves. Our students will be able to not only work on their independent functioning goals within their individual education plans but also have the chance to communicate when they need to have their sensory needs met. These materials will create a safe, interactive environment for our students with the highest needs to play and enhance their skills.

Expected Outcome(s)

We want to create a space for our students with disabilities to have safe, calming and stimulating opportunities in a fun atmosphere that will foster enjoyment along with increasing students' fine motor skills as well as meeting their sensory needs. We hope to see our students improve and reach their sensory and independent functioning goals.
