The project goal is to create a whole kit of materials to incorporate the Sphero BOLT coding robot with students to engage in programming and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math within the gifted classroom.
Students are interested and excited to learn with hands on experiences and love robots. Technology and engineering are going to be high demand areas in the future and now. Our students today need to have opportunities with as many ways as possible to find our next engineers. This is supported by a recent to article published in The Harvard Gazette (November 2021) in which employment in STEM occupations has grown 79 percent in the past three decades, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The need for a vast, talented citizen in STEM-related fields has never been more necessary, said Bridget Long, dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Using the Sphero BOLT coding robot students are experiencing and enhancing their problem-solving along teamwork skills in the classroom environment that encourages experimentation, ingenuity and creativity. Sphero BOLT coding robot uses block coding that is an ideal pathway into technology development for students. The block coding allows for new learnings into core coding skills in an easy, fun way for students to grasp.
This project will benefit students by exhibiting creativity through the use of advanced programmable sensors and 8x8 LED matrix. Students will be able to explore coding and robotics with hands-on creative play with endless possibilities. Beginner to advanced level of programming for students to work through over time with access to a library of educational games and activities.
With the generous funding of this grant proposal, children will have the opportunity to participate in STEM education. This could spark an interest in science and technology that could lead to a life changing invention or discovery. Students will have new experience, gain confidence and develop perseverance to strengthen their skills. Ideally, creating critical thinkers that will change the world for the better. The opportunities provided with the materials in this project would allow students to gain further knowledge and experience to reach their full scientific literacy potential.
