Project Goal

The goal of this project is to acquire the necessary materials needed in order to provide students with hands on scientific experiences.

How Project Benefits Students

My goal is for our classroom to transform into a place for students to grow their science knowledge in the most hands-on way possible. Science can be an extremely abstract concept for students to try and understand which is evident in science being one of the lowest performing subjects in our district. My students come from a rural area where a majority of them live below the poverty line and have not had the access to a variety of life experiences such as going to the zoo or a museum. This grant will provide them with learning experiences that they would not have had otherwise that will directly impact their ability to master new learning.

Expected Outcome(s)

In the third grade we cover a variety of science topics. Out of everything we learn from August to May, one-fourth of our benchmarks cover the study of animals and plants. We explore the concepts of classifying animals into the major categories (mammal, reptiles, etc), identifying the structures of plants and observing the changes in habitats over the seasons. With the materials provided we will be able to strengthen a large portion of the material we are expected to teach while providing memorable lessons for the students to build their knowledge.
