Project Goal

I would like to purchase copies of the Florida Sunshine State Reader 2023-2024 books for a family book club that I am hosting at our school. 

 

How Project Benefits Students

Families with students in grades 3-5 can participate in our monthly book club. Each month I will select a book from the SSYRA book list for the families to read together, or separately. Once a month, we will meet in the media center at night to discuss the book that we have all read. I would like to provide a book to each family to encourage them to join our club. They will keep the books in the end and add to their personal library at home. Students can also use these books to participate in our HCPS SLAM program. This program has students read a book from the SSYRA list and create a 2D, 3D art project or a book trailer. Winners from each school get to go on a field trip to the convention center to meet an author and get a signed book. 

 

Expected Outcome(s)

I would love for this event to encourage families to read together more. Our lives are so busy, that my hope is this becomes something that families make as a weekly priority and encourages more reading and talk about reading in the home. This will also help increase the amount of SLAM projects completed at our school level.
Statics show that a student who reads/read to for 20 minutes a day will be exposed to 1.8 million words a year. Those 20 minutes that families can use together to read the book club book can make a huge impact on both the child and the adult.  

 

Detailed Cost Summary

I would like to buy 10 sets of books for families to have to be able to participate in our book club. Each month they can sign up for the event ahead of time and get a book to use that month.
