Project Goal

My goal is to engage my students in their learning across all disciplines. In order to do this I need materials that I can use to build lessons that span all subjects and draw on students interests.

How Project Benefits Students

I plan use the robots to let students apply what they have learned from science, math, and reading to real-world scenarios. For the birding supplies my goal is to create a year long citizen science research project utilizing Project Feeder Watch by the Audubon as we attract birds and record different data about what we see. We can also use the bots to simulate bird behaviors to plan out our feeder placement!

There are so many uses for the versatile robots!

Students could research problems like litter in the ocean and then engineer a device to attach to the robot and calculate how much litter they could skim in a given time, or create a working simulation of a device to haul medicine to remote villages, coding Sphero through math mazes they create for each other, the possibilities are endless. Students could use math to design buildings (area and perimeter) and then plan the most efficient route around the city using the Sphero as a mass transit.

I have requested 4 robotic units so students can work in groups to come up with unique solutions that they could share with the class. Collaboration is so important in STEM as well as seeing how there can be more than one solution to a challenge!

For Project Feeder Watch we will put up a bird feeder outside our classroom window with 3 different types of food (seed, suet, mealworms) and see what we can attract. We will record the species of birds we see, and track them over the course of the school year. What birds stay, what birds disappear, why? Students will learn about migration, seasons, food types, and how birds respond to these various events. By watching the birds who select each food type we can also learn about animal adaptations!

There are so many applications for these tools!

Expected Outcome(s)

Students will be engaged in all the challenges which will incorporate multiple subject areas. Students will meet and exceed the standards for their grade levels.
