Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

Miles Elementary's goal is for all our students to feel safe and empowered to learn each day. Last year Miles Elementary went from a D school grade to a C school grade. Miles has goals for our students to
achieve academic and behavioral success. For the 23/24 school year, Miles’s goal is to become a B school grade and have all of our students learn on grade level.

Our Boys 2 Men program aims to empower our boys to achieve academic and behavioral success. We would like our program to impact our boys in that referral, detention, and suspensions go down while the boy’s grades and academic achievements improve.

Project Goal

Miles Elementary's goal is for all our students to feel safe and empowered to learn each day. Last year Miles Elementary went from a D school grade to a C school grade. Miles has goals for our students to
achieve academic and behavioral success. For the 23/24 school year, Miles’s goal is to become a B school grade and have all of our students learn on grade level.

Our Boys 2 Men program aims to empower our boys to achieve academic and behavioral success. We would like our program to impact our boys in that referral, detention, and suspensions go down while the boy’s grades and academic achievements improve.

How Project Benefits Students

The strategy of our Boys 2 Men program is to build a culture and community with the boys that make them feel safe, loved, and empowered to do their absolute best on the Miles Campus and out in the community. Boys 2 Men offers mentorship by two young men that come to Miles every Wednesday to work with the boys. Our mentors work with our boys on various topics of character development and life skills that include friendship, leadership, and emotional regulation. We also implement the seven mindsets as Miles is a seven mindsets school. The boys engage in weekly lessons, activities, presentations, and field trips. All our lessons align with our mission to empower our boys of color by giving them skills to combat issues with the disproportionate discipline of boys of color. Evidence has shown that boys of color are disproportionately disciplined in comparison to Caucasian students leading our boys of color to more referrals and suspension.

Expected Outcome(s)

Boys 2 Men will be starting our 2nd year and we have had a lot of positive feedback from teachers, staff, students, and parents. The boys that were in our program did better overall in behavior and academics. The referrals for our boys went down by 50% last year. The teachers that have our boys in class are supportive of the program and find great value in the program. Students in our program became proficient in their
academics as well. All boys were promoted to the next grade. We hope to keep this momentum going in this school year, creating a program to enrich the boys academic and behavioral growth.
