Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
T-Mobile Foundation - $681.00
To have our Access Points students 9-12 operate a successful popcorn and lemonade stand serving over 1400 Robinson High School students and staff members on Fridays. We believe that we have the vision and all of the main ingredients to make our business endeavor successful, but we are lacking the initial investment for equipment and supplies to begin.
We have 20 outgoing and driven intellectually disabled high school students that would love to increase inclusivity within Robinson High School. Our plan is to naturally include our students within the school’s culture as our small store will be a hub serving Robinson Senior High School students and staff treats for all their hard work. This small (2 product) store will benefit Robinson High School’s overall inclusive culture, as well as provide our intellectually disabled students positive academic and social skill building interactions with staff and peers while learning beginning job skills.
We are requesting a grant to initially fund our store, with the intention that it will self-fund through sales and inventory management after the first investment and donations. The popcorn and lemonade sold will be priced a small percentage above cost as it is intended to continue to fund the store. Items are marked higher than cost to ensure that we can repurchase items even if costs increase while growing our business model. Any additional profit will be used to innovate our business model as well as provide the opportunity for the students to observe other successful businesses in the community.
While a teacher is always in charge of the oversight of money and ordering, the students will take a leadership role with upper-class students taking on managerial duties to assist the staff store manager. All students in the access program will participate in the business while learning proper employment skills and role-playing in the Career Preparation course. The students will learn what to order, safety/hygiene, how to generate customers, and the social skills in providing great customer service. The goal is for our students and staff to work together to create the best small business experience at Robinson Senior High School while learning and growing along the way.
Store Innovations
In the class, students will brainstorm ways to get new customers. The more our general student body and staff patronize the store, the more our students in the class get to practice the skills they learn.
We also plan on evolving our store model over time with new ideas and upgraded equipment. One possible idea is adding one specialty flavored popcorn and lemonade one day a month as a promotion. Another future idea is to have a small delivery service to the office staff. This will allow our students to have multiple interactions with staff, while they make a strategy for when and how to deliver the items. We believe that the office staff will enjoy this treat, and this will also allow those who do not normally get the chance to visit the store an opportunity to interact with our students.
