Project Goal

The goal of this project is to create a hands-on and engaging marine science project that fosters a classroom environment of critical thinking, responsibility, and discovery by building upon the success that we had during the last few years with a similar grant project.

How Project Benefits Students

If funded, this year long project will involve the creation and maintenance of four saltwater aquariums, one freshwater aquarium, and one brackish water aquarium for my marine science and biology classes. The aquariums will allow students to study and explore complex and exciting marine and estuarine biology and ecology in a classroom setting. Four aquariums will contain organisms representing the major categories of marine life and will contain a unique marine ecosystem. The two other tanks will represent ecosystems found in the Tampa Bay Estuary watershed. This project will be fully integrated and will contribute to lessons and activities throughout the school year and for all units in marine science class. The following academic elements within the curriculum will be particularly and uniquely explored. Manipulating seawater parameters to maintain an aquarium while comparing to ocean ecosystems. Studying the adaptations of marine invertebrates and vertebrates and explaining the relationships between these groups and how they thrive in their environment. Additionally, an understanding that the chemical and physical properties of seawater affect in many ways the conditions in ocean ecosystems. We will also compare and contrast and explore the relationship between the freshwater environment and the marine environment. The administrative aspects of the project will begin during the first week of October and be completed by the first week of April. Operationally, the project will begin in mid-August and end at the end in May.

Expected Outcome(s)

Learning outcomes will be compiled throughout the year using a variety of assessment types. Additionally, there will be an end of course exam at the end of each semester. Students should show educational gains on all marine science assessments through their work with the lessons associated with the project. All students in my marine science and biology classes are expected to greatly benefit from the project as well as all other teachers in the department that help with the lessons.

Detailed Cost Summary

The items required to complete the marine aquariums project sum to 1734.87. All materials and organisms listed are to create between 6-8 saltwater, brackish water. and freshwater aquariums for four marine science classes and two biology classes.
