Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Amgen Foundation - $205.84
This project will give my students an opportunity to witness the lifecycle of the monarch butterfly from egg to adult. Students will be able to observe butterfly metamorphosis up close while making daily observations and posing questions on our wonder wall.
This year my students will take the fifth grade science assessment at the end of the year. One of the standards we will review focuses on the lifecycle of Florida plants as well as animals that undergo complete metamorphosis. Having actual butterflies in the classroom will bring science to life for my students and help with student engagement. Students will be able to help take care of the caterpillars each day as we document the changes we observe.
Students will have a better understanding of complete metamorphosis after completing this project. They will be able to compare and contrast the difference between complete and incomplete metamorphosis.
The milkweed plants will be placed in the butterfly habitat cage to prevent any caterpillars from escaping. Students will witness the caterpillars eating the plants before forming its chrysalis. When the butterfly emerges as a class we will release it in our school garden. Butterfly nectar will be placed in the feeder and kept inside the butterfly habitat, just in case a butterfly chooses to emerge over the weekend.
