Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The goal of this project is to expose young readers to literature that is engaging, culturally responsive, and rigorous. Qualitatively, I'm looking for an increase in the want and love for reading. Quantitatively, I'm looking for an increase in number of minutes spent on reading per student, an increase in student reading data as monitored through statewide assessment, and an increase in genres read this school year. Holistically, I want my scholars to have text in hand that they LOVE!

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to expose young readers to literature that is engaging, culturally responsive, and rigorous. Qualitatively, I'm looking for an increase in the want and love for reading. Quantitatively, I'm looking for an increase in number of minutes spent on reading per student, an increase in student reading data as monitored through statewide assessment, and an increase in genres read this school year. Holistically, I want my scholars to have text in hand that they LOVE!

How Project Benefits Students

This project will benefit students in multiple ways. The Storyworks magazines will expose young readers to a variety of text all in one magazine. We will be able to enhance almost all of the 4th grade ELA benchmarks through strategy building and exploration of the text provided by Scholastic. The text provided through Storyworks is rigorous, promoting higher order thinking for my readers and a chance to collaborate and converse about topics relatable to them. The readings are culturally responsive and allow for students to activate their background knowledge and hoan in on their interests while reading. Storyworks truly provides resources that will challenge students thinking about 4th grade reading benchmarks while making learning fun and engaging- as their teacher, I want them to have this worthwhile experience.

Expected Outcome(s)

The outcomes I expect from this project are: an increase in a want and love for reading as they enjoy fiction and nonfiction they are interested in and relate to. Because a desire of reading will be fostered, students will contribute more to classroom discussion and activity, therefore increasing content knowledge and student scores on standardized tests. Another outcome I can expect is exposure to wide varieties of text, which will allow for students to expand their knowledge in vocabulary, structures of text, and plenty of writer's craft! Overall, Scholastic Storyworks Magazines offer educational outcomes that are worthwhile for students.
