The Calm Down Oasis' goal is to give students a secure place to recuperate and unwind when they are experiencing strong emotions or require a mental break. This Oasis will also focus on students' sensory skills, allowing a diverse spectrum of students to find something they enjoy.
Students will benefit from the Calm Down Oasis by having a calm down area in the Social Worker's office to relax and take a mental break that fulfills their sensory needs. These sensory elements include a buildable artificial grass wall, access to live plants, and white noises that include forest or wave sounds. Every year, as the School Social Worker, I implement small group and individual counseling with students. Having a separate place for students will help to further the goal of having these groups and individual counseling in my office. A faux grass wall, white noises, and live plants for students to see, hear, touch, and nurture will contribute to a safe haven sense.
Students at Seminole Heights Elementary will benefit having an area in the School Social Worker's office that offers the ability to practice mindfulness and coping skills, clear their mind of distractions, and promote their nurturing side by caring for the live plants. The outcome is adding on to more areas within the school for students to feel safe and reset so they can get back to learning in their classroom as soon as possible.

A plant stand will be placed on the edge of the calm down area for kids to view and actively care for by walking around the school and putting the plants in our butterfly garden for vitality and growth. The artificial grass wall panels will be installed on the wall to increase the feeling of safety and to serve as a sensory stimulus for students to touch. The white noise machine will add to the safe haven atmosphere as well.
