Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Hillsborough Education Foundation - $1,650.00
The goal of this project is to acknowledge and reward students for showing academic growth and meeting behavior standards. Your funding will go towards providing young girls an opportunity to celebrate their successes and moments of growth. By doing this, I believe we can build a momentum for academic achievement all year! The funding will cover the transportation of 2 field trips. Please see below for field trip information.
Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds, single-parent households, and failed expectations of what life would be like during the coming-of-age process in their lives. As a teacher, many of those students have confided in me their daily struggles and I realized more than ever the urgency for mentorship within my school and community. Specifically, there is a need to provide young women with the resources and tools to be more than their circumstances, insecurities, and what society tells them to be. This project will serve as an incentive to keep students on the right track. We expect to have 60 girls in the club and we hope to take 30-60 of them on quarterly field trips. Because students will be tracked both academically and behaviorally through a mentorship program and empowerment club, we want to celebrate their moments of growth be it big or small! While the club is made up of 9th-12th grade students, our biggest demographic is 10th and 11th grade students. These are two of the most pivotal years of high school in regards to graduation requirements and testing. By mentoring and celebrating these students, we know we can keep them on track to graduate.
Field Trip #1 will be after quarter 1 in November: Friendsgiving Outreach at Alabaster Land in Brandon. Students who improved GPA or grade in a struggling course or maintained passing GPA will participate in outdoor team building activities and a celebration lunch funded by a local restaurant. We will also have a speaker lead a motivational workshop. The field trip will be all day.
Field Trip #2: The second trip will be in January to celebrate the hard work in quarter 2. Our theme this month will be "renewing our vision." We will take students to USF in which they will explore the campus and participate in workshops with current college students on setting goals. We want to show students that their hard work can lead to so many opportunities like a college degree. Specifically, I am partnering with USF student services and the USF Latino Scholarship program to create an all day schedule that will expose our title 1 students to all the school has to offer. This is also a great trip because our school's population is mostly Latino/a students.
Please note: The picture I have attached is the BLOOM leadership team. The girls were taken on a field trip to do a photoshoot and participate in a team bonding escape room. Many of the students had never done either of those activities. I knew it was important to celebrate their hard work as some of them have improved their GPA and have made better choices socially. This is the magic of field trips: we expose students to new things, show them they are loved, and it keeps them motivated to do their best!
Students will develop the intrinsic motivation to do their best while we celebrate their growth. We will see this via a decrease in poor attendance, tardies, behavior issues, and an increase in academic achievement.
The item listed above covers the costs of one bus that can take up to 34 students on a field trip. Bus 1 will cover our first field trip and bus 2 and 3 will cover our 2nd field trip.
