Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

My goal is to help students with speech sound disorders increase their articulation skills while also improving their early phonology and literacy abilities. Students with speech impairments are at risk for later reading, spelling, and academic difficulties. My students with speech sound disorders need to improve their ability to communicate effectively, be understood by others, as well as sound out and produce letter sounds accurately.

Project Goal

My goal is to help students with speech sound disorders increase their articulation skills while also improving their early phonology and literacy abilities. Students with speech impairments are at risk for later reading, spelling, and academic difficulties. My students with speech sound disorders need to improve their ability to communicate effectively, be understood by others, as well as sound out and produce letter sounds accurately.

How Project Benefits Students

Students with speech sound disorders often struggle to develop strong underlying phonological skills. Targeting early phonological awareness is necessary to develop speech, language, and literacy skills.

Orthographic instruction improves speech intelligibility and language skills while developing a strong literacy foundation. Literacy Speaks! focuses on improving speech intelligibility and expanding language skills while developing a strong literacy foundation.

Children need to be able to produce sounds correctly when speaking in order to effectively communicate with others. Intelligibility is necessary so that students can to be understood as well as express themselves appropriately. In addition, students need to be able to produce sounds correctly so that they can accurately sound out words when beginning to read.

Using this resource will increase students' articulation skills so that they will be understood as well as effectively communicate with others. In addition, this therapy tool will support students' early literacy skills, which is necessary for reading, comprehension, and further academic success.

Expected Outcome(s)

The Literacy Speaks! program will provide engaging learning opportunities for students with speech sound impairments to not only effectively speak and communicate, but will also improve students' early phonology skills. Both of these abilities are extremely important to develop literacy skills. This kit will allow a caseload of up to 90 students with speech impairments to master their communication goals on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) as well as improve their literacy and promote academic success.
