We will be working to develop a greenhouse with our students. Our students are center-based students, all on Access Points. The students would be responsible for planting, growing, and maintaining organic, healthy fruits and vegetables in a controlled environment. The project will promote teamwork and an understanding and passion for caring for the environment. Additionally, we hope to create student interest in jobs and careers related to agriculture, gardening, and/or farming.

Project Goal

We will be working to develop a greenhouse with our students. Our students are center-based students, all on Access Points. The students would be responsible for planting, growing, and maintaining organic, healthy fruits and vegetables in a controlled environment. The project will promote teamwork and an understanding and passion for caring for the environment. Additionally, we hope to create student interest in jobs and careers related to agriculture, gardening, and/or farming.

How Project Benefits Students

A greenhouse will serve as a tool for students to learn how to grow their own fruits and vegetables. It is a hands-on project that provides life-skills, job/employability skills and skills to be self-sufficient/ self-sustaining. Students will learn to work together to complete various tasks like planting, watering, and weeding (care/maintenance), and harvesting. They will track plant growth data, monitor temperature and climate changes (science skills). Students will use the produce to learn inventory, packing and distribution skills. All students will be able to access the greenhouse to successfully participate in activities.

Expected Outcome(s)

The greenhouse project is expected to maximize student participation, understanding and interest in careers or hobbies related to agriculture, gardening, and/or farming. It provides life skills and employability skills to students with significant cognitive and communication disabilities. The greenhouse would benefit all students throughout the school as the project is designed to provide various activities to meet multiple level needs.
