Project Goal

Having served as a math coach at Kingswood for 3 years, I noticed a need for recognition of our students' academic success. My goal is to start the National Elementary Honor Society at Kingswood Elementary School.

How Project Benefits Students

When working in a school where the majority of the students are economically disadvantaged, many of our students struggle academically. Therefore, most of our focus goes towards students who are struggling academically. My hope is that by acknowledging our students' academic successes we are able to push more students towards success and growth. As quoted by Napoleon Hill, "Focus on the possibilities for success not on the potential for failure.

Expected Outcome(s)

The overall expected outcome for the grant is to provide the 140 4th and 5th grade students at our school with the opportunity to celebrate their academic success. By recognizing students' successes, I am hoping to increase motivation and effort in our classrooms. Ultimately, I want to shift our mindset in regards to the academic potential at Kingswood.

Detailed Cost Summary

The cost of $1,311.50 covers the costs of our initial start-up of the National Elementary Honor Society at our school as well as the necessities for our meetings, induction ceremony, as well as membership certificates and pins. It also includes shirts for our members to proudly display their accomplishment.

We have applied and have been approved to start a charter at Kingswood. We are already completing the bi-laws and informing students and parents about the program. We just do not have the funding to have the induction ceremony and run the program as it is set according to NEHS guidelines. That is where the grant can help us make it happen.
