The goal of my project is to combine effective reading lessons with microphone headsets, a translator app, and tablets to promote literacy in the classroom for below level, bilingual, and monolingual students.
This project will allow students to have a small portable device (a durable, case-protected, kid's tablet) to use during lectures, group work, partner work, and/or any movement activities throughout the school day. Below level students, bilingual students, and/or monolingual students will be able to use the Microsoft Translator App to listen to my lessons and translate it in their own language in real time. This includes Spanish, Vietnamese, Haitian Creole, and Hindi which are the languages spoken in my classroom. I will be able to use the Presenter Mode during lessons so that students can listen in their own language on their own devices with their headsets. This will have minimal impact on the pacing of my lesson.
When I turn off the Presenter Mode, I will be able to listen to students' questions about my lesson in English and in real time. Students can speak into their microphones on their headsets in order to do so. This will happen at their desk, small group, and even during outdoor learning activities. Having the headsets on will also prevent disruption for monolingual English Speaking students.
Last, but certainly not least, students will be able to use their tablets to take pictures of any text that we are reviewing in class and of any text they choose to read at the school's media center. Also, they can listen to any text in both English and in their native tongue. The app will translate the text and allow the students to listen to the text in their native language as well as English by simply taking a picture of the text. They can take their kid-friendly, durable tablets to the media center or to my classroom library without me worrying about any damage to their device.
The tablets are smaller than the school laptops that kids sometimes drop by accident when having to return it to the charging stations. The tablets can also remain charged for 13hrs which will allow the students to use it for translating throughout the entire school day. The tablets will also allow children to easily translate any content from our Wonders curriculum by just taking a picture of its content. This will allow students to master B.E.S.T state standards for reading in 2nd grade for effectively and efficiently.
I would like to begin this project from November 2023-May 2023. This will allow me to have approximately 6 months of working with students using these tools and will allow me to have multiple data points during the project's timeline. These data points will be PM2 and PM3 for the STAR state reading test and PM2 & PM3 for DIBELS reading assessment. It will allow me to have a measurable project because PM2 will be in the Winter (the start of my project) and PM3 in the Spring (the end of my project).
I am SUPER excited about my project! This is such a practical, effective, and beneficial use of technology in the classroom. I am looking forward to seeing my ELL's show massive growth in their academics this school year!
According to our DIBELS data, 61% percent of my students are well below grade level in reading. According to STAR Reading 72% are not meeting the grade level benchmark in reading. The expectation is that after using the tools from this grant, the end year data for DIBELS & STAR will increase to at least 70% percent of my students meeting benchmark in reading. The items from this grant will not only benefit 11 students in my classroom, but it will benefit future students who may be bilingual or monolingual and need the live translator support during lectures to learn English, and learn how to read. I will reuse these items for all below level or ELL students in my classroom each school year.
