Our students are hungry for SLAM Books! SLAM is our Student Literacy and Media reading program. Each year our state library organizations select a list of 15 book nominations and invite kids to read and vote on their favorite books of the year. We receive one to two copies of each book, but it is SO HARD to have enough copies for the more than 1,000 students who participate in this reading program. Our goal is to acquire another complete set of 2023-2024 state-nominated SLAM Books to share with students and teachers.
According to an avalanche of academic research, reading for pleasure is one indicator of student success in school even more so than socioeconomic status. Reading for pleasure helps spark interest in other study areas and makes students more confident in learning. Children who read for pleasure are more likely to become adults who read for pleasure. Our students are begging and pleading for more books from our SLAM program. They are hungry to participate in our book clubs, to create SLAM projects in response to the books, to talk with one another about the books, and to compete in our reading quiz show SLAM Showdown at the end of the school year. More books will increase access to the books for all students.
Students who read our SLAM books will come to love reading even more. Many of our SLAM books are the first book of a new series of books. Students will be inspired to continue reading more books in the series when they love reading the first one. Students create artistic projects based on the SLAM books that they read. These projects include a written response to the book. Creating SLAM projects helps improve writing skills and helps improve students' connection to a book. The best outcome from reading SLAM books is how our students will find themselves in many of these stories and will meet people different than themselves in these stories. Books provide windows, mirrors, and doors to our students--something that benefits not only the readers, but all the people in their lives.
This project itemizes one copy of each SLAM book for this school year. We are working hard to provide as many copies of the books as possible to our students!
