Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The goal of this project is to develop the makerspace in the media center where students have an opportunity to engage in hands-on, creative, and cooperative activities that merge Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) as well as build literacy and social skills. I began building the makerspace in January 2023 and would like to expand it. The supplies purchased would provide two new activities along with restock a very popular one.

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to develop the makerspace in the media center where students have an opportunity to engage in hands-on, creative, and cooperative activities that merge Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) as well as build literacy and social skills. I began building the makerspace in January 2023 and would like to expand it. The supplies purchased would provide two new activities along with restock a very popular one.

How Project Benefits Students

A makerspace will allow students to use concepts they learn in the classroom and apply them to real world issues and extend their learning. The makerspace would also allow students apply their problem-solving skills that they will need in their future careers. Any activities will support the standards students are taught in class. Library programs promote literacy but not just in English language arts; a makerspace will help build literacy throughout the curriculum.

Students have used the 3Doodler pens to create 3D structures and jewelry. A Spanish class has even used it to review vocabulary words by building the words out of the filament.

Students would be able to create buttons about causes they care about and be able to use it to create reading awards for reading Sunshine State Young Reader Award Novels.

The Perler Beads would allow students to create pixelated art projects that they can share with friends and family.

Expected Outcome(s)

A makerspace will also increase collaboration amongst learners across grade levels. A makerspace would also provide an incentive to students to complete in class assignment so they will have more time in the library's makerspace. A makerspace would also provide a positive learning environment for some students who struggle in the traditional classroom setting since it allows for greater creativity and autonomy in learning.

The makerspace is expected to increase the number of students coming to the media center.

Detailed Cost Summary

Purchases of button maker and supplies and Perler Beads would be new activities as described in the projects benefit section. The filament would be to restock the 3Doodler pens (https://learn.the3doodler.com/about/) previously purchased .
