The primary goal of my project is to improve the reading proficiency of my 2nd grade students at Belmont Elementary who are currently struggling with phonics and foundational literacy skills. I aim to accomplish this by implementing the UFLI Foundations lessons, supported by the use of multisensory phonics kits. These kits will serve as indispensable tools in my effort to bridge the gap in literacy achievement among my 2nd grade students.
Enhanced Literacy Skills: The multisensory phonic kits will engage students through a variety of tactile, visual, and auditory methods, making it easier for them to grasp phonics concepts and develop strong foundational literacy skills.
Individualized Learning: Each kit will be tailored to meet the specific needs of students. By providing these kits, we can create a more personalized learning experience, ensuring that struggling readers receive the targeted support they require.
Increased Confidence: As students make progress in their phonics and literacy skills, they will gain confidence in their ability to read and comprehend texts. This boost in self-esteem can have a positive impact on their overall academic performance.
Long-term Academic Success: By addressing phonics deficiencies at the primary level, we aim to set our students on a path to long-term academic success. Strong foundational literacy skills are essential for future learning and achievement.
Expected Outcomes:
I anticipate several positive outcomes as a result of this project:
Improved Phonics Proficiency: We expect to see a measurable improvement in students' phonics skills as assessed through pre- and post UFLI evaluations and weekly assessments on the skills being taught each week.
Increased Reading Fluency: With enhanced phonics skills, students will become more fluent readers, which will, in turn, improve their comprehension of texts.
Decreased Achievement Gap: By providing targeted phonic intervention to students in need, we aim to reduce the achievement gap between struggling readers and their peers.
Positive Teacher and Parent Feedback: I anticipate high student engagement and buy in with the multisensory kit. Each student will get to manipulate daily the components daily as we move through each step of the UFLI phonic lessons.
