Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

Otis and BC are the resident Guinea Pigs at BC Graham Elementary. They were adopted from the Humane Society in August 2022 through the "Pocket Pets for Teachers" program. They are used in many ways at school. Last year, they taught 5th graders responsibility with their lunch time jobs of caring for their habitat. They were an incentive for students who had behavior goals. We used them for attendance encouragement with "GP Parties" at breakfast. Students really loved having interactions with the boys throughout their school day.

Project Goal

Otis and BC are the resident Guinea Pigs at BC Graham Elementary. They were adopted from the Humane Society in August 2022 through the "Pocket Pets for Teachers" program. They are used in many ways at school. Last year, they taught 5th graders responsibility with their lunch time jobs of caring for their habitat. They were an incentive for students who had behavior goals. We used them for attendance encouragement with "GP Parties" at breakfast. Students really loved having interactions with the boys throughout their school day.

How Project Benefits Students

Last school year we saw many benefits to our students:
1. Increased attendance
2. Decreased behavior incidents
3. Lessons in responsibility
4. Building Home-School Relationships
5. More opportunities for student engagement.

Expected Outcome(s)

We would like to have support with our Guinea Pigs, Otis and BC, by upgrading their habitat and equipment that would make their visits to classrooms easier and safer.

We expect if we can do this, more teachers would be willing to welcome the guinea pigs into their classrooms more frequently, students would earn more opportunities to interact, whether it is in school or in their home. By students having these chances, they will learn about the responsibility of having a pet.
