Project Goal

I would love two copies of each Sunshine State Young Readers Award books for my fourth students to access during small group instruction and independent reading. The goal of this project is to expose my students to a wide range of engaging and appropriate literature. These books have been selected by the SSYRA for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. I want to grow my students' love of reading, as well as help develop their independent reading skills.

How Project Benefits Students

The SSYRA website states that "The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8, sponsored by the Florida Department of Education (DOE) and Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME). The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. representation." My goal is to ignite a life-long love of reading in my students!

Expected Outcome(s)

By the end of this project, students' decoding, fluency and comprehension skills will improve, and students will have the opportunity to develop a deeper love for reading. Students will not only be eligible to participate in a district-wide SLAM project, but will also get to vote on their favorite SSYRA book in the spring after listening/reading at least three of the books.
