My goal is to foster positive self-esteem and conflict resolution skills with 4th and 5th grade students in a small group setting.
The purpose of this project is to use toys like Barbie Dolls, Ken Dolls, and Action Figures to represent students and help them feel more positive about their own image and ability to believe in themselves. Students will participate in a counseling group with parent permission. Each student will be able to take home the toy that represents themselves as a takeaway from the group. The Barbie brand has become incredibly inclusive with lots of shapes, skin complexions, and abilities. The Superhero action figures are diverse in what "powers" they represent in helping others.
Students will improve self-esteem and have a more positive self-image. Students will feel comfortable advocating for themselves and being upstanders for others. Students will acquire positive conflict resolution skills that they can utilize while in elementary and in preparation for middle school. Students will also learn to develop resiliency when times are tough personally, academically, and socially.
These funds will be used solely to purchase individual dolls/action figures for group members for them to use as a takeaway once the group has ended. The doll clothes and superhero capes will be reused continuously throughout counseling groups. Most products will be purchased from Amazon on less a cheaper retailer is available at the time of purchase.
