A hair braiding program with mentoring and academic components
Entrepreneur skills will be added as well.
It will require homework and brief sessions before and during lunch time.

To historically explore the hair braiding industry.
To master beginners braids cornrows and box braids
To improve academic performance in core classes (minimal)
To reduce tardiness and practice being in time for classes at school
To gain an understanding of owning a business in the hair industry
Students will complete a six workshops over six weeks. Each session has a targeted goal beginning with interview and one on one objective session
Week two targets tools and supply knowledge and uses
Beginning three strand braiding board
usage will also be taught
Week three targets braiding and more
Practice makes perfect
Week four targets corn rows and more
Week five students will complete a shop interview and discuss entrepreneurship techniques

Week five preparing for expo and heads in display contest
This allows them to display their work and get feedback from teachers
Week 6
Constructive feedback will be provided
Awards and certificates presented
Animated videos will be completed by one of our co instructors and shown through out the workshop sessions

How Project Benefits Students

Provides knowledge of the hair braiding in order to become a hair braider or hair braiding instructor

Boost self esteem and the art of developing a positive self image and
enhancement

Teaches team work and social skill development as braiders often help each other and work in teams

Participation will require continued grade performance at pride I envy levels or greater in all course work
D or F grades are unacceptable

The important and relevance of being in time
 

 

Expected Outcome(s)

To braid using a braiding board for instructor critique
To braid cornrows or box plaits on a mannequin head for display
To maintain a C or better in class during the program and after sessions are complete
To not have more than 2 tardies in all classes
To begin practicing hair braiding on live individuals
To showcase good customer service skills
Pass a post assessment on the hair industry
