We would like to have a calm down corner in every classroom. The Calming Otter Den is a place where our students can pause and reset. It is stocked with calming strategies techniques, visuals, and fidgets. It’s a safe and positive place, free of blame, pain, or shame.
The use of a calm down corner teaches emotional regulation while promoting self awareness and self management with our students. The calm down corner helps students identify and control impulsive behavior. It also takes away the stigma students may feel after a demonstrating big emotions in the classroom. Finally, the calm down corner will help to reduce behavior meltdowns.
Students will gain calming coping strategies while utilizing the Calming Otter Den location in class. Students will remain in class during instruction and learning does not have to stop due to behavior.
Every classroom will have the materials needed to implement the Calming Otter Den in their classroom. The items being requested will create an easy grab and go calm down corner kit for teachers. Every teacher will receive rug that clearly defines the space, breathing techniques visuals, sand timers to monitor the time the student is having the break and when they need to return to instruction, and a basket with fidgets for students to use. Having the same materials for all teachers will provide consistency for all a students no matter the room they are in.
