Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

This project will level the playing field and enable our elementary students to have more opportunities to participate in hands on projects that help with the Nature of Science standards as well as the Physical Science Concepts of Forces and Motion as they become aware of and access current robotics technology and use this technology to design, build, program and test robots to solve design challenges and to successfully compete in robotics competitions. Student scores in tested content areas will increase through cross-curricular enrichment opportunities and additional time spent in hands-on experiences tied to state standards in math, science, and English Language Arts.

Project Goal

This project will level the playing field and enable our elementary students to have more opportunities to participate in hands on projects that help with the Nature of Science standards as well as the Physical Science Concepts of Forces and Motion as they become aware of and access current robotics technology and use this technology to design, build, program and test robots to solve design challenges and to successfully compete in robotics competitions. Student scores in tested content areas will increase through cross-curricular enrichment opportunities and additional time spent in hands-on experiences tied to state standards in math, science, and English Language Arts.

How Project Benefits Students

This grant will enable students to prepare for life by honing communication and leadership skills as students work to collaborate while using and improving critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will navigate the engineering design cycle in teams in designing and building Spike robots and learning to successfully code the robots in response to challenges posed or self-created.
Other benefits include enhanced academic content knowledge and stronger vocabularies due to hands-on engineering and design experiences and direct application of math and science concepts such as learning about angles to code the appropriate turns in robot mazes and using all four mathematical operations as well as scientific principles to determine the distance covered by one revolution in movement and how many revolutions are needed to cover a given distance measured by students. Engagement levels naturally produced in robotics carry over to all academic areas and benefit all students as they eagerly share connections made from robotics to math, science, STEM, and other classes. English Language Arts skills will strengthen through students' work in interpreting building instructions and coding modules, collaboration, documenting their thinking, and communicating their work with others. Resilience and tenacity will increase and will benefit students for life in all endeavors.
Teachers will be able to check out kits to use in their own classrooms to dramatically improve access to all students.

Expected Outcome(s)

Students will become better problems solvers as they develop robot design and building skills.
Students will become better collaborators and communicators with more resilience and tenacity, leadership, and programming skills as they deepen their understanding of the engineering design cycle and share this knowledge with others.
Students will increase real-world applications skills as they create and solve cross-curricular design challenges.
Students will become stronger competitors as they compete in district and other competitions with Spike Prime robots.
Students will become better test takers as the Spike Prime experiences strengthen content knowledge, causing test scores in math, science, and English Language Arts to increase by at least 10%.
All students will show learning gains in mastery of the Nature of Science standards, of which our current fifth-grade students showed lesson than 80% mastery of every pretested standard at the beginning of this school year.
Fifth Graders students will score higher on the FSSA in the area of Physical Science-Forces and Motion.
Enrichment opportunities that enhance communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills provide cross-curricular academic as well as motivational benefits for all students.
