Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Hillsborough Education Foundation - $1,050.00
Tampa Residential Facility is starting a book club in which students will have the opportunity to build their personal libraries. Books and reading materials will be selected based on interest, relevancy, Lexile level, and impact on academic growth.
Students will share their experiences, feelings, thoughts and details about their books weekly in class and after school. They will do so in a safe and supportive environment.
Books will be age appropriate for these middle school and high school students.
Students will also benefit from the SAT as ASVAB test preparation guides.
My goal is to expose these incarcerated students to different genres of fiction and nonfiction. Upon release, they will be able to keep their selected books to build their personal libraries. I expect that reading comprehension and vocabulary will improve as the ELA teachers will use specific highly effective strategies to promote learning.
Book purchases will be equally distributed between nonfiction, fiction, reference, and test prep. More is allocated to test prep as those publications tend to be pricier.
