Project Goal

The 2nd grade team would like to create a community garden in this section of our school. This particular section is at the 2nd of the 2nd grade hall. We would create this garden with the help of all 2nd graders.

How Project Benefits Students

With this garden, we hope to create a sense of community among 2nd graders and, by extension, the rest of the school. We will also be incorporating science standards into this garden to help students to understand the plant life cycle. This garden will give students real life experiences for our 2nd grade science standards. For example, we hope to explore soil types and textures, how much plants retain water based on the soil, and the soil's ability to support the structure of plants.

Expected Outcome(s)

This garden will help to promote continued understanding of our science standards. It will give students hands on experience with plants.

In particular, we will be observing the growth of plants based on the different soils that we use. We plan to plant sunflowers and cactuses. We will be observing their grown rate from date of planting until the last day of school. We will be observing to see if the plants grow faster in one type of soil versus the other type of soil. This aligns with the 2nd grade standard, SC.2.L.16.1
Observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans and butterflies.

We will also be observing the different things that plants may need for survival - i.e. sunlight, soil, and water. We will be adjusting the water for different plants to see the amount of water that best benefits them. We will also be observing which plant does better in direct sunlight versus shade and little sunlight. This aligns with the 2nd grade standard, SC.2.L.17.1
Compare and contrast the basic needs that all living things, including humans, have for survival.

We will be making these observations once a week and will discuss the data once a month. At the end of the school year, this data will be presented around the garden for the entire school to read. Though the 2nd grade team will be initiating this community garden and will be conducting the observations, other grades are welcome to join in to also make the same observations. There will be a section of this garden left open so that other grades will be given the opportunity to plant their own plants and make their own observations.

We will also be adding decorative rocks to the garden. We are hoping that this garden and rocks help to make sure that students feel as if they have a safe space in the school. We also want to make sure that they see Oak Grove as a community and can see the benefits of working together.

Detailed Cost Summary

We will need soil and plants to help start our garden. We will also need rocks to help keep the soil in it's place. We will also decorate the rocks with paint.
