My goal is to provide a Wordly Wise workbook for each of my students. Wordly Wise is a research-based supplemental reading program that has been around for over 50 years! This program includes “direct instruction, robust activities, peer sharing, and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of today’s varying student populations.” You can find more information here https://www.epslearning.com/products/wordly-wise-overview This resource has been used on my campus for many years and we have seen great growth in vocabulary and in reading comprehension. We are not a Title 1 school and therefore we depend on grants for additional resources.

Expanding a student's vocabulary directly corelates to improvements in reading comprehension. Improved reading comprehension not only helps with understanding literary text but also impacts understanding of science, math and social studies text. A student with a broader vocabulary is also able to use upper-level words in their writing. My own children remember using Wordly Wise in upper elementary and middle school and to this day, they tell me how much it helped them. Vocabulary is key!
Last January, one of my 5th grade students tested at an early 3rd grade vocabulary level. The next week, I started using Wordly Wise. By April she had jumped to an early 5th grade level. This is just one example of the growth that I witnessed last year. I didn’t receive a set of Wordly Wise Workbooks until January of last year, so I didn’t have an entire year of instruction. Even still, of my lower quartile students, 65% of them went from below grade level to proficient in vocabulary. Not every teacher can afford to have access to this resource. Of the group of students who did use Wordly Wise in 4th grade, they grew 90% in proficiency. Based on that, I conservatively expect my incoming 5th grade students’ PM1, PM2 and PM3 scores, as well as iReady diagnostics to increase by at least 75%.” I also plan to administer a baseline vocabulary test in the first month of school and retest in April. I feel confident that this long standing and trusted product will help my students to grow and be more successful.
