Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The goal is to acquire a set of electric guitars, amplifiers and a bass for my guitar class to perform with. This will transform guitar class from an ensemble that can hardly be heard, to one that can keep pace at a pep-rally performance, in the cafeteria as part of a cultural celebration, or on stage performing a variety of musical genres.

How Project Benefits Students

This project will benefit students by providing a set of class electric guitars that will be permanently integrated into my guitar class’s curriculum and performances at Shield’s MS. Shields MS is a title 1, transformation school. While many students choose to buy personal electric guitars, many are not so fortunate. A set of class electric guitars makes performing music more equitable and equips students to perform more diverse genres of music. Electric guitars open up a lot of performance opportunities for my guitar class. Our district-provided acoustic guitars are adequate for the purpose of classroom instruction, but they cannot possibly play loud enough to be heard in an informal setting such as a cultural celebration or pep-rally. Additionally, amplified instruments introduce the opportunity to incorporate STEM lessons into music class such as feed-back loops, electromagnetic interference, and circuits.

Expected Outcome(s)

I expect that by improving our class instruments we can have more frequent, successful, and culturally relevant performances. This will inspire students to pursue success more rigorously. This can be quantified by measuring the rate of student “pass-offs.” Pass-offs are my way of documenting when a student displays a skill, concept, or piece of music on their instrument.
