Project Goal

The goal of this program is to engage students at all grade levels in STEM activities by igniting their imagination with fun and age-appropriate books and cooperative, hands-on design challenges.

Category

School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.

How Project Benefits Students

The future is in the hands of our young children. We need them to be creative and innovative risk takers. By giving them opportunities in the classroom to listen to engaging read alouds and participate in exciting and unique design challenges, we not only foster a love of reading but we also encourage the development of creativity and innovation.

Each book will be accompanied by a list of ideas to use as STEM activities. Teachers at all grade levels will have access to the set of 19 books along with the activities and can utilize them during science, math, reading, or STEM instruction.

Expected Outcome(s)

Developing creativity and innovation allows children to think with a "science" mind. Expected outcomes include students' enhanced perception of themselves as scientists and innovators along with more excitement and engagement with the district's annual STEM Fair.

Additionally, expected outcomes include students gaining a heighten self-confidence when presented with challenges, increased social skills when working with peers, and the ability to extend and explore presented design challenges with their own variations. Because each challenge begins with a story, students will be able to "see" science in everyday situations and events.
