The goal of this project is to strengthen the reading proficiency and stamina of elementary students with learning disabilities. With the Simple Words Decodable Chapter Books, my special needs students will read texts that put the phonics skills they are learning in remedial small groups into practice in the general education classroom.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
The wonderful thing about these texts is that they align with the phonics curriculum I use during my small group instruction. My students (grades 3-5) will be assigned one to two chapters a week to read during their independent reading time in their general education classroom. Every Friday, we will explore the chapter(s) in a "book study" style that reinforces the purpose of our daily phonics practice - to improve reading fluency and increase reading comprehension to grade level standards. The collection contains books at various stages of literacy, including short vowels, blends, digraphs and silent e, so I will be able to target the specific needs and goals of each student year after year.
These decodable chapter books will instill literacy independence, stamina and confidence in my students with learning disabilities. As a result, my students in grades 3-5 will increase their literary reading comprehension skills by 1.5 grade levels as measured from the fall to the spring iReady reading diagnostics. They will also improve their oral reading fluency by 20 correct words per minute as measured by the "MASI-R Oral Reading Fluency Measures" form A and form B diagnostics.
