Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Tampa Electric Company - $698.00
The goal of this project is to give our 5th grade students the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities while exploring a variety of science concepts. The compilation of these two activities will give students common experiences allowing teachers to engage them in meaningful discussions on the concepts of habitats, ecosystems, interdependency, animal classification, biodiversity, and adaptations.
School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.
Students will enhance their observation and inference skills by dissecting owl pellets and determining the type of animal that the owl had ingested by using a bone identification chart. This activity will also allow students to review the concepts of animal classification including vertebrates, invertebrates, and arthropods.
A trip to Crystal Springs Preserve will allow students to use dip nets in a freshwater ecosystem and explore the concepts of metamorphosis, adaptations, interdependency, and biodiversity.
Students will gain a better understanding and appreciation for the delicate balance of flora and fauna in our Florida habitats. When students can experience hands-on activities in the natural world around us, they will be able to apply gained knowledge to better understand other habitats around the world.
Learning gains will be measured by the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) in Science. Our school's 23-24 performance in the area of life science was as follows:
18% below standard
59% at standard
23% above standard
Our goal is to improve each category by 5%.
