The goal of this project is to increase student engagement, collaboration, and accountability. To do that, I must increase student buy-in in my Intensive Reading class. As a 10th grade Intensive Reading teacher at East Bay high school, it can be very difficult to compete for students’ attention when they have the internet at their fingertips. How can I get students interested in a novel that they label boring? It begins with creating a buzz, a genuine interest in the story.
I would like to host a book tasting for the novel, Lord of The Flies. Imagine walking into the classroom and it looks like an island, the desks are grouped in 4’s to symbolize the key characters, each student seat has a brown bag with clues in them. Students hear the theme song of Survivor in the background. There are paper palm trees in the back of the classroom, and under each student seat is a wrapped copy of the novel.
The book tasting would require the following: a student copy of the novel, a pronged folder already pre-assembled with the district’s graphic organizers and various worksheets, and a treasure bag filled with novel clues.
Our goal is to excite students and pique their interest in reading. Students have expressed that they feel “stupid” for failing the reading test. My class is more than just test prep; it’s hopefully building a genuine interest in reading. I believe that if students have their own copy of the novel, it will affect their intrinsic motivation, classroom engagement, metacognitive skills, annotation and accountability.
Students should feel that teachers care and are willing to go the extra mile. I am requesting a donation of $1400 to use for student paperback copies, folders, tasting bag.
Let’s give literacy students a reason to smile at the bay. Let’s show them we care. Let’s show them the benefit of reading for enjoyment.
Other -
It’s not always a “cake walk” in my classroom. There are kids who are embarrassed to read, who can’t read, and kids who struggle with test anxiety. East Bay is home to 1300 students, 90% of whom are recipients of free or reduced lunch.
I realize that the district provides 30 copies of the novel, but I don’t think that’s good enough. How are students going to feel invested in annotating when they can’t underline in the actual book. I often ask students to mark the text with sticky notes and half the time they forget to take them out which allows the next student to have the answer. If each student had their own copy they could practice annotating, metacognitive skills, marking evidence and so much more.
As a literacy teacher at the Bay, I strive to get my students excited to read which will in turn produce better scores across the board.
With these funds, we can allow students to feel excited with their own copy of the novel, pre-made unit materials in folders and presented nicely with a preview bag.
My goal for the 2024-2025 school year for East Bay’s literacy department is simple: each student has their own copy of Lord of The Flies, their own student workbook and an excited teacher at the door. Increased student engagement positively affects student gains.
