By using bar, ring, and horseshoe magnets along with toy cars, iron fillings (encased), and compasses students will learn about magnets, magnetic poles, and the materials the are magnetic.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
Physical Properties of Magnets is a 4th grade standard that requires the students to “Investigate and describe that magnets can attract magnetic materials and attract and repel other magnets”.
During the weeklong unit developed by the Hillsborough County Public Schools science department, “Student will explain how the poles of a magnet affect if magnets attract or repel”. Using the bar, horseshoe and ring magnets students will have an opportunity to learn about the north(N) and south(S) poles of a magnet. During hands on experimentation, they will discover what happens when the north pole of one magnet and the south pole are put together as well as a north/north and south/south combination. To accomplish this, they will also use the cars found in the “Hands to Mind” kit. Students will also discover how the poles create a magnetic field and how using a compass can help determine direction.
Second “Students will explain the different metals that are attracted to magnets”. Using the encased iron fillings students will view how magnets affect the iron. They will also conduct experiments with a variety of metals like pennies, paperclips, and silver (jewelry) to determine which are magnetic. Again they will use their compasses to see how a magnet can affect the needle.
Third, “Students will explain the different situations that could affect the pull or push of a magnet”. During this series of investigations again using the cars again as well as demonstrating that magnets work in water, and through different thickness of glass, wood, and paper
Finally, students will explore the different ways magnets are used in everyday life. These include daily household uses like their refrigerator, computers, and phones as well as applications they are not aware of such as recycling and the use of magnets in navigation both on land and at sea.
By using the bar, horseshoe, and ring magnets as well as the compasses, cars, and other included magnetic items students will be able to describe how magnetics can attract magnetic materials and attract and repel other magnets.
I am requesting these manipulatives for use in my classroom this year and with care will be able to use them for many years to come. I am also always excited to share with my peers because, during their fourth-grade year students are required to take a district standardized science test at the beginning, middle, and end of the year as well as a district created test at the end of each unit. My expectation is that the additional hands-on experimentation will help students show increased understanding of magnets getting the questions about magnets correct on all tests. I also hope that using these manipulatives will create a long-term memory that will aid all students on their future exams.
