Project Goal

To engage students as engineers using the design process while stimulating their creativity.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

How Project Benefits Students

Our world is becoming more and more different than the world we knew and many careers my students will have in the next 20 years have not been created yet.

This is where STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) becomes so valuable. Giving my students a chance to gain more design process and problem solving skills using STEAM practices weekly in our classroom is paramount to giving them skills for careers we can only try to predict.

They will have to learn that their first try isn't always the best try and sometimes it takes many, many attempts and plans to correctly execute what you want. This is a skill a lot of students are not acquainted with and struggle to grasp. They will also need to follow directions both auditory and written, which in 2nd grade is a struggle. But when they complete all the steps given they will be left with a beautiful reward they created themselves.

Expected Outcome(s)

Students will be able to utilize these products in a variety of STEAM lessons that will focus on increasing their cooperative teamwork skills, their knowledge & use of the engineering design process, and ability to follow a given set of directions from start to finish. Student engagement is expected to also increase due to the hands-on materials we will be using.

I am expecting that using these learning tools will help students understand the design process more fully and help them apply that knowledge as assessed on classroom assessments throughout the school year.
