How Project Benefits Students

The garden will be used year round by students in the culinary classes and before school club.

Academic Improvement: Students will apply math skills to measure plant growth, calculate planting schedules, and manage garden resources.

Critical Thinking: The project will encourage problem-solving and decision-making as students address challenges in the garden.

Nutritional Awareness: Growing their own food will increase students’ awareness of healthy eating and the benefits of fresh produce.

Environmental Stewardship: Students will learn about sustainable practices and the importance of caring for the environment.

Social Skills: Working in the garden will enhance teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.

Expected Outcome(s)

Over 200 students in the culinary class and before school club will benefit from this support. The culinary teacher will oversee the program.
Based on our project goals:
Conduct pre- and post-tests to assess students’ knowledge before and after the gardening lessons.
Evaluate students’ ability to apply concepts through projects like creating a plant growth journal or designing a sustainable garden plan and track student involvement in garden activities.
Use gardening scenarios to create math problems (e.g., calculating area for planting, measuring growth rates) and teacher will observe and provide feedback on students’ problem-solving processes during gardening activities. Lastly, collect data on students’ eating habits before and after the project.
