How Project Benefits Students

A school garden is a great way for students to learn and grow in so many ways. Academically, it brings subjects like science and math to life. Kids can see how plants grow, learn specific academic vocabulary, and even use math to measure and plan their garden. It’s hands-on learning that makes school subjects more interesting and fun.

For the last several years my class has participated in two citizen science projects. The first is Tomatosphere, where we get to plant and track seeds that have flown in space. The second is a program with the Audubon, Project Feeder Watch, where we track and report the birds we see at our feeders each week. This grant will help me make sure we can continue to participate! My students LOVE these programs.

Socially and emotionally, tending a garden teaches important life skills. Students work together, share responsibilities, and see the results of their efforts, which boosts their confidence. It’s also a peaceful, outdoor activity that helps reduce stress and improves overall well-being. Plus, kids develop a love for nature and healthy eating habits by growing and tasting their own vegetables.

Expected Outcome(s)

We expect the school garden to bring a lot of positive changes. First, it can help improve school attendance because kids will be excited to come to school and work in the garden. We also expect students to develop a richer vocabulary as they learn new terms related to gardening and science. The hands-on experience can boost interest in STEM subjects, making science and math more engaging and fun. Plus, with this increased engagement, we anticipate higher test scores in these subjects. Overall, the garden will make learning more interactive and enjoyable, leading to better academic performance and a love for learning.
