Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The goal for this project is to help students excel in math and science by increasing their FAST testing & Science Test scores throughout the year and showing growth while also having fun doing so with hands on investigations, experiments, and centers/group work. Proficiency on these tests are great, but I would love to just see each student show growth in some way. Overall, I would like 80% of students to show growth from the beginning of the year progress monitoring tests to the end of year tests.

How Project Benefits Students

This project will benefit students by allowing them time for hands on science activities during class learning and also a chance to review past math concepts and multiplication strategies to help them excel in math and continue to practice these concepts throughout the year to show gains. They will have opportunities during morning work time, math centers, and ELP to play different math learning games and activities to solidify confidence in their skills in the math classroom and be able to apply those skills to real world learning. These experiments/investigations for science will include dissecting owl pellets, allowing students to discover the full effect of predators vs prey while also linking to literacy with books to go along with the investigation), a long term investigation with growing a couple of plants to show the life cycle of a plant and how the direction the seed is facing does or does not affect the direction that plant grows, and also hands on investigations with floating magnets to go along with other sets of magnets already in the classroom to show the relationship between a magnets poles. In math, the different activities (place value dry erase boards and fraction and decimal match games will go along with other games and activities already implemented in the classroom to allow students to have hands on concrete learning for math review and learning in small groups with each other, with the teacher, or in their own free time in the room. These activities will help close learning gaps and help students to achieve the growth that I know they are all capable of. It is also important for students to have a word wall/vocabulary wall in the classroom and being at a school with a high Spanish speaking population, it is equally important for those word walls to have visuals included which is where the vocabulary bundles will be incredibly beneficial for students to enrich their English learning skills to be able to match the words we are learning in science to their language to better help them understand concepts quicker with pictures. This is also beneficial for our ESE students that are lower readers to help them put the words together with an image.

Expected Outcome(s)

Students will increase their confidence with different math/science skills (life science, physical science, decimals, fractions, multiplication, etc.) through math learning games & science investigations day to day. This will in turn increase test scores and their abilities to apply math & science skills out in the real world. The overall expected outcome is for 80% of students to show gains from the beginning of the year to the end of the year progress monitoring tests in both math and science.
