Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The goal is to generate enthusiasm for science lessons about body systems and their functions.

Project Goal

The goal is to generate enthusiasm for science lessons about body systems and their functions.

Fifth grade students will create a “wearable anchor chart” of the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems. They will then add science concepts such as life cycles and moon phases to the back and sleeves of their shirts as science review.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

How Project Benefits Students

Students will be excited when they find out they will have the opportunity to create their own guts Tshirt as part of their anatomy learning. The excitement will continue as they use glow in the dark paint to illustrate moon phases on the back, then add other science concepts to their shirts. Unlike many other science projects, this one will not end up in the trash - they will wear it home when it is complete. This project will put the science concepts they need to know in front of them as their peers wear their shirts, and become a conversation piece as they wear theirs at school and at home.

Expected Outcome(s)

Witter is in a historically low performing school. The students struggle to connect the science concepts to every day life. Therefore, these shirts would help bridge the gap between instruction and their daily life.
Fifth grade students need to master the standard: SC.5.L.14.1 Identify the organs in the human body and describe their functions, including the skin, brain, heart, lungs, stomach, liver, intestines, pancreas, muscles and skeleton, reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder, and sensory organs. None of my students are able to name the functions of these human organs.
After completing the unit on human organs using the organ shirts and creating their books, my goal if for my students to be able to identify the organs and their functions with at least 70% accuracy.
