Project Goal

I would like to host a family engagement night for our school. Students and families will visit our school for food and literacy at night.

Category

School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.

How Project Benefits Students

Students in Hillsborough County Schools are encouraged to participate in the district SLAM program. This program is a literacy program that includes art and digital media. Students read at least one book from the SSYRA (sunshine state young reader award) list and then submit an art project that was inspired by the book. I would like to host a "book tasting" night. At this event parents and students get to take a sneak peak of all the books on the list without having to read the book. I have a sheet that they use to take quick notes to record if the book interests them or not. It's like speed dating for books. I would like to do it in rotations to allow maximum time with the books. While one group is "book tasting" the other group will be eating.

Expected Outcome(s)

After the tasting I would expect to see and hear excitement about literacy and the books that were on display. I would also love to see an increase in SLAM projects submitted and books checked out. Last year we had 65 projects submitted in grades K-5. I would like to see 100 projects submitted this year. After the event is over, I will raffle off 30 books (15 from each age group) to the students who attended the event. All students who attend the event will receive a ticket for attending. This ticket is their raffle entry (at no cost to the students). It is another way to encourage attendance. This will help them get a start on their book projects. The other 30 books will be added to the media center circulation for checkout.

Detailed Cost Summary

I will be ordering 4 book sets (total of 60 books) from an approved vendor through Hillsborough County. Each book set has 15 different books. I will be purchasing food from Walmart. My goal is to have a spaghetti dinner, but I need to clear it with the lunchroom first.
