Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

My project goal is to allow small groups of students to read SLAM books together and discuss to aid with reading motivation and SLAM participation. Students will then create a project to enter into our school's SLAM Showcase and, hopefully, be chosen to participate in the District SLAM Showcase. This year, I would like to have at least 5 participating students per grade level. As the Media Specialist, I am always looking for ways to get books into my students' hands and I would like to give the extra copies away (after the SLAM Showcase) to help add to their home libraries.

How Project Benefits Students

Due to the limited number of copies each school receives, students are unable to read with their peers and discuss what they've read. It also limits the number of books each student is able to read. I've noticed that when students can read the same book as their friends, they are more motivated to do so and to finish the book. Having more copies will help expose students to more genres since they won't have to wait as long to check out a book, as well as helping them identify their interests. Once the SLAM Showcase is over, I hope to give away the extra copies to the students who completed projects so that they can add to their personal book collection at home.

Expected Outcome(s)

Due to having more copies of these books so that students can read with their friends, I expect at least 5 students per grade level will want to participate in the SLAM Showcase. Participation will be tracked by entries per grade in the Showcase. With more students reading and discussing the books, motivation and participation will improve.
