Hillsborough Education Foundation - $192.50
This project's goal is for each student to receive a copy of Story Works magazine from Scholastic every other month (6 times a year). The magazine will increase engagement and expose students to high interest grade level articles with current events while aligning to the Florida B.E.S.T. ELA standards. Each issue addresses all areas of the ELA state standards with engaging discussions, activities and digital access to enhance the home and school connection. The goal is to improve students overall reading and writing end of the year mastery of grade level ELA standards.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
Every issue of Storyworks is packed with skill-building resources, engaging activities and authentic stories to support a variety of learning styles and reading levels.
The following features are included in each issue and align with grade level B.E.S.T. standards in ELA.
1."Up Close" boxes that set a purpose for reading and prompt students to focus on one important reading skill per story.
2. Writing prompts that accompany every major article to provide authentic writing tasks.
3. In-magazine activities that help students hone vocabulary, grammar, and opinion-writing skills—and have fun while doing it.
4. Online skill-building activity sheets that introduce and reinforce key ELA skills such as text evidence, main idea and supporting details, inferencing, and more in our comprehensive Core Skills Workouts.
These features will provide differentiated instruction to assist with remediation for learners needing more time to master the ELA standards as well as enrichment for other students needing to expand their thinking and reading and writing skills to push them to an above level test score.
These highly engaging articles can also propel students to a life time of a love for literacy.
The expected outcomes of using the Storyworks magazines with my students on a second and third grade level is that they will improve reading skills in the area of foundational skills, vocabulary, non fiction comprehension, fiction and poetry comprehension and writing. These areas will be assessed three times a year using FAST and I-Ready data. At the beginning of the school year, third grade students receive a baseline score after taking FAST PM1. In December, students would be expected to show growth on FAST PM2 scoring at least a level 2 with a level 3 showing mastery of standards. At the end of the school year in May on FAST PM3, students would be expected to score a level 3,4, or 5 to indicate they have mastered or surpassed the expectation for third grade. On I-Ready, second grade students would be expected to score 100% of the typical yearly growth as shown on the Diagnostic 3 taken in May. This growth is determined by completing a I-Ready diagnostic in September to have a baseline score. Then a mid year I-Ready diagnostic is completed in January and the expectation is that students score at least 50% of their typical yearly growth to indicate that they are on track to make 100% growth by May.
Each subscription is $8.75 per student for print and digital access. This is for 6 issues per school year so each magazine is approximately $1.46 per copy per student.
