Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The goal of this project is to create a real-life, hands-on learning lab for students who are in grades 6-12+ that participate in Family Consumer Science classes at Lopez Exceptional Center. Our school serves students with the most significant cognitive, behavioral and physical challenges. It is vital for their future to be exposed to instruction that promotes independence through instruction in life skills. This includes activities of daily living and personal care, communication and social skills, as well as job and employability skills. Students will then be assessed on their performance of these skills over the course of the school year

How Project Benefits Students

Students in our center learn in a variety of ways that include lots of repetition and practice. Students will benefit from this project by having hands-on access to materials and items that they can interact with on a frequent and consistent basis. This learning lab will be a permanent classroom in our school that is set up with different rooms: kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom. The materials provided by this project will ensure that these areas have sturdy and authentic contents for us to use for instruction and repeated practice. The students will participate in daily activities that engage them in realistic and engaging learning. Participation in the Life Learning Lab will enhance student performance in all areas, including academic learning, through development of skills including problem solving, communication, decision making, collaboration and much more.

Expected Outcome(s)

During each school year, students that participate in learning activities in the Life Learning Lab will show improvement in their ability to perform the specific skills that are taught in our engaging and student-centered environment. These improvements will be measured in a pre and post assessment format. Students are currently being measured for the pre-test. A checklist with rubric grading allows for data to be collected. This system allows for students to be measured uniquely and specifically based on their individual ability level.

These checklists will then be filled out again at the conclusion of this school year. The goal for the first year of this project is that students will make at least 10-20% improvement overall on the checklist items. The materials purchased through this grant will be used to provide hands-on, student-centered learning in our lab at Lopez Exceptional Center for many years to come!
