The goal of this project is to increase access to students in grades K-5 to the books that are on the 2024-2025 Sunshine State Young Reader's Associate (SSYRA) book list so that they can participate in the school and district SLAM (Student Literacy and Media) showcase.
Goal 1: The students at Springhead Elementary will have increased access to the SSYRA books.
Goal 2: The students at Springhead Elementary will have increased opportunity to participate in the Springhead School SLAM Showcase.
Goal 3: Students will participate in the HCPS SLAM Showcase per HCPS Media Guidelines.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
"Do you have any SSYRA books?" As a Media Specialist I hear this question multiple times a day. With a large student population (800 students), there never seems to be enough SSYRA titles in out Media Center. This grant will allow students increased access to the SSYRA books. "Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation." Giving the children a variety of reading that will increase their background knowledge, vocabulary, and ideally love for reading. Furthermore, students have the opportunity enter the district's 2025 SLAM Showcase. "The Student Literacy and Media (SLAM) Showcase is a district K-12 event celebrating reading! Students at participating schools read books from their grade level Florida award nominated lists (Florida Reading Association, Sunshine State Young Readers and Florida Teens Read), then create Videos, 2D Artwork or other 2D creative expressions connected to the book (or books)" they read.
The SSYRA book list is changed annually, thus in order for students to participate in the SLAM showcase the books on the list need to be purchased every year. Likewise, the books on the SSYRA list are sought after by many districts, schools and students in Florida, making the books high in demand. Often times places such as the public library do not have them readily available. Therefore, when children want to participate in the Hillsborough County SLAM showcase, the financial burden is placed on individual school libraries, teachers, and families. Having these books in our school will allow more equitable access for all of our students. Furthermore, when the showcase is over and a new year's list comes around, these quality pieces of literature will remain in classroom library collections for years to come.
All children will have equitable access to the SSYRA Jr and SSYRA 3-5 2024-2025 books.
1. The number of K-5 students that read 5 or more SSYRA books will increase from 26% (23/24 school year) to 35% (24/25 school year). The outcome will be measured by book list tracking sheets for students. Teacher's will sign the list when a student reads a book.
2. The number of students participating in the Springhead Slam Showcase will increase from 30 students (23/24 school year) to 50 students (24/25 school year). The outcome will be measured by SLAM projects turned into the Springhead SLAM Showcase on Campus.
3. 5 students (limited by HCPS) will participate in the district SLAM. The outcomes will be measured will be the SLAM Showcase projects that are entered in the district Showcase.
